Mas Que Vinos
2023 Ercavio Tempranillo Viñas de Meseta
BLEND | 100% Cencibel (Tempranillo)
VINEYARDS | Cencibel, the local clone of Tempranillo, is uniquely suited to the harsh climate of the area with a smaller, more compact bunch size and thicker skin to withstand heavy winds. Bush & trellised vines (average of 50 years old) on limestone & clay soils at 750-800 meters.
WINEMAKING | Fermentation in stainless steel tanks followed by malolactic in cement amphora (tinajas). Aging for 5-8 months in French and American oak barrels.
NEW LABEL | The 2021 vintage of Vinas de Meseta marks the debut of a new identity for the Ercavio line from Mas Que Vinos, featuring art from Jose Uriszar. Jose is a long-time artist friend of Alexandra, Gonzalo and May’s. He is renowned for his large scale outdoor paintings many of which are found across Rioja, including Haro. He came to paint in the vineyards on the meseta, and was especially struck by the wild and unique old vines. While he painted, a thunderstorm drew up so he decided to call his painting the electric vine, merging the lightning with the shape of the vine.

"The 2023 Ercavio Tempranillo Viñas de Meseta was produced with fruit from old Cencibel vines (mentioned on the label), coming through as serious and classical. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in small stainless steel vats and matured in concrete for five months and then six more months in used barriques. It's balanced and easy, with 13.5% alcohol, a medium-bodied palate and fine tannins."
TASTING NOTES |
Expressive aromas of dark fruit: black cherry, plum and blueberry mixed with a pleasant minerality, hints of cedar, vanilla, liquorice, spice and espresso. Medium bodied, yet dense, this wine offers ripe tannins under a complex blanket of black fruit. The acidity is well balanced and the finish is long and velvety.
