Violet Hill

2023 Santa Barbara Pinot Noir

VINEYARDS | This Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County and specifically the Santa Rita Hills. The Sta. Rita Hills AVA is renowned for its unique terroir that produces exceptional cool-climate wines. The climate is defined by the cool maritime influence from the Pacific Ocean, with coastal fog and strong winds (temperatures during ripening months are nearly 15 degrees lower than areas to the west), leading to an extended growing season to allow for full phenolic ripeness. Vineyards are oriented east-west (rare for California), bounded by Purisima Hills to the north and Santa Rosa Hills to the south. Soils are predominantly loamy, with sand, silt, clay, and marine deposits contributing to the wines' saline character.

WINEMAKING | Primary fermentation with some stem inclusion in small vats is followed by malolactic conversion and twelve months of aging in French oak, 25% of which is new barrels.

TASTING NOTES | It is dense with rich ripe cherry, raspberry, and boysenberry flavors and aromas complemented by subtle cedar, star anise, and woodsy bramble notes.
